Youth Alliance on ICT for Development

Youth Alliance on ICT for Development is a program targeting young people through the use of information and communication technology for sustainable development. The poverty which has affected the quality of social, cultural and political lives in Africa has slow development in the last decade. But the presence of information and communication technologies (ICT) can carved out an alternative path to development. Notwithstanding the urgency and enthusiasm with using this new medium for social and economic change, the Internet has brought about negative as well as positive contributions to development in Africa.

Project Challenge

A project to bring sustainability to ICT Library centres in the rural communities was carried out and training were designed and implemented for teachers and students in the rural communities in the area of Information and Communication Technology, Internet and Telecommunication for rural development. Communities are:

  • Usman Dangwoggo Secondary School, Bugundu, Zamfara State
  • Queen of the Rosary College, Onitsha, Anambra State
  • Iwere College, Koko, Warri, Delta State
  • Government Secondary School, Odi, Bayelsa State

Girls in ICT

Between 2014 and 2017, we have empowered 1000 young women with ICT skills with specialized training in networking and telecommunication; this is in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology and HUAWEI Technology. We also carried out ICT projects targeting more than 400 youths, women, girls and farmers in rural communities to build up their capacity and enable them to contribute to national growth and development; this is in partnership with the Office of Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), now Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is to contribute to the United Nations SDGs: Goal 1 which is to end poverty in all its forms, Goal 4, ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all and Goal 5, achieving gender equality and empower all women and girls.
